Assonance

can

be

so

irritating

–
A

way

to

dodge

the

duty

to

rhyme

–
A

sort

of

sonorous

imitation;;
And we all know it’s not the same
As working to work the words (in passing
I’d better mention that sometimes some
Times

it

works);

but

what’s

missing
Is

that

damn

nailing

of

the

final

line.

This I assert, having tried it out
In

various

different

styles

–

and

I

know
How

very

hard

it

is

to

do

it

right

–
That anyone who rhymes should take a bow.
Here’s to the makers and, being blunt,
I’d love to rhyme that word but can’t.
