Wine, Wooster and Help 4 Hospitality

There was never a fellow of such indolence as Bertie Wooster. Coronavirus would have suited him to a tee. While my lockdown has been largely a case of frenetic juggling of editing and teaching I have had some distinctly Woosterish moments. On two warm summer evenings I found myself in the great company of Wodehouse as I reclined on a lounger, while others did all the serious work around me.

The languorous moment was made all the more civilised by the addition of a couple of bottles of wine from the Help 4 Hospitality online pop-up shop. They have prepared a case of twelve summer stunners to cover picnics and barbecues. All are available online at the new addition forms part of Berkmann Wine Cellar’s initiative to help the individuals and businesses in hospitality struggling at the heart of this crisis.

They sent me two bottles, a Podere Montepulciano D’Abruzzo and Morandé One to One Estate Merlot – Chile. Bertie Wooster knew his wines and I am glad to report that he would have found these bottles to be delightful. The Podere, a polite white  of great breeding, it was just the ticket for sipping as the sun declined over the terraces. The Merlot, peppery, with notes of eucalyptus, was a brave enough to match a grilled steak.

My back garden might not be Blandings, nor even the Drones Club but quaffing these splendid wines with good friends and family served as a reminder that there are better days around the corner…and even that idle cove Wooster would have been tickled to think that he was doing good merely by drinking.
